“Appar alias Tirunavukkarasar was the foremost of the Tevaram trinity who lived in the 6th-7th century CE. He was a Jain who converted to Shaivism after he experienced some personal miracles. Later on he, along with Sambhandar (a child devotee of Shiva) went around various shaivite shrines and spread devotion. Together they influenced royal patronage of shaivism which led the way for the popularity of shaivism among ordinary citizens.
This particular song written by him, is in praise of Lord Shiva in TiruvannAmalai, a renowned shaivaite shrine, representing Lord Shiva’s manifestation as one of the five elements – fire.”
